Re: Why doesn't Compiz work on an Ati card?

Feisty with an 'ATI Radeon MOBILITY 9600' card works out of the box.
Using the desktop effects now without problems.

Essentially, it all comes down to the capabilities of the open-source
driver that is installed by default (which is limited for some cards).
Unlike nVidia, ATI hasn't yet added composite capabilities to the
proprietary Linux driver so your stuck with the open-source driver.

While this is probably not the answer you want, I've never been able
to get it working with the ATI cards either. Remember that both Beryl
and Compiz are still in beta, and are being heavily developed. So
while you may have to wait, I can't imagine it will to long a wait
(less than a year...)

I have an Ati Radeon card in my desktop comptuter. 9200SE I believe.

I try to enable Desktop effects but it doesn't work. I also checked the
Restricted Drivers Manager but it says my card doesn't need them. (Is
that true?)

Strangely enough, I also have a VERY basic low end laptop with Intel
graphics, and all the bling works like a charm on it, never had to do
much to get it to run. Just added the Compiz manager (GL Desktop) to
have a sane way of configuring the options and that was it.

So should it work on an ATI card? SHould I just go with Nvidia?
