I struggled to get video and audio to play consistently in both edgy
and fiesty. I finally overcame the problem by downloading automatix2
(http://www.getautomatix.com/) and installing the multimedia codecs.
I also ditched Totem in favor of VLC and have had no problems.

hmmm. ive had problems where it wouldnt play WMA, nor MP3, nor MPG,. It
played avi and wav files just fine
Have you followed the instructions on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats to get these formats
working?
Also, if totem is not playing certain files, I would give vlc a try. It
has a decent GUI and built-in support for many formats.

Torsten
