Hi all , i decided to share this soltuion to a common problem of installing linux on a windows XP pc using partition magic. I had problems regarding the above error messages, and XP wont start. there are several solutions after googling but none better than this one I found out here, its simple and easy.

It resolved the problem...which was usually down to the grub/linux hiding the NTFS partition
cheers everyone
