Belkin F5D6050 seen, but no network

I'm running Edubuntu Dapper Drake (6.10) on a Macintosh Powerbook
400Mhz G3 (Pismo). It sees my Belkin USB wireless adapter, but won't
network. The same adapter works fine in OS X and OS 9. I've activated
it, but I don't know what else I need to do. Here is the output of
iwconfig:
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
wlan0 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"****" Nickname:"okuwlan"

I don't know how to set the nickname. It's not an option under OS X
or 9, and I was never asked under Edubuntu, it just showed up.
Thanks,
Bert
