Why not just set Thunderbird not to delete email from the server?
IMAP _is the much better option if a mail account shall be shared
between multiple clients. It will, e.g., remember the read status, which
POP will not
True, but since the account is already POP, a separate IMAP server is
needed which adds complexity.
Not half as much, imo, as trying to keep message status straight when
leaving messages on a POP server for retrieval by multiple parties.
I use Fetchmail to fetch from gmail and drop into the Maildir directories
serviced by my local IMAP, and dovecot for the imap server. Fetchmail
takes a little bit of setup, dovecot almost none.
