1). I would not recomend Automatix, it can set you up to have problems with
upgrades in the future.
2). Mplayer error is almost certainly this :

you can fix it by going to prefrences and switching it to X11 or something
similar.
3). I generally install all of the plugin packs for gstreamer (ugly,bad,
good, and the multiverse variants of each), and have 0 problems playing much
of anything. I must admit, I canot remember the last time I played a DVD on
my desktop, however.

I don't know if this would help, but did you try installing all the DVD
codecs using Automatix2?
