What do I have to do to make this happen???

Basically,

Configure the kernel w/ framebuffer support. Use the
default VESA drivers *or* the card specific drivers,
not both. Use fbset to tweak/troubleshoot. When you
determine what works best add the appropriate
video=<params> line to your lilo or grub.

Or google framebuffer + howto.
