cool thanks, the upshot is that it is a known bug related to audio
drivers that is fixed in the latest versions of the kernel.
the workaround for now is to open a browser, run a video, pause it,
hide it away and never close the window. Apparently any new browsers
will not hang/crash as long as the background one is still running.
