mpg video problem

I'm running Feisty on a Thinkpad with an Intel 915 video chip and the restricted
codecs installed, whenever I try to play an mpg file on either kaffeine or
gxine, the entire system freezes. This is true for any mpg using files which
work fine on another machine. There doesn't seem to be a record of anything in
the X log or the System log.

I've tried reinstalling a number of packages w/ no luck. Any other ideas?
