Permission issues with CD-ROM

Hi all,
For the last couple of months I've been having issues with the CD-ROM
drive not automounting, refusing to mount or eject by anyone except root
and generally being a pain in the jacksie.
I had a recent issue with groups going missing and so I decided to
recreate the cdrom group and put all users back in it. I also did "chgrp
cdrom /dev/cdrom" which also didn't make a difference.
The fstab entry for the DVD-ROM drive reads:
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,auto 0 0
So normal users should have permission to use CDs normally. Can anyone
suggest what might be going wrong here?
Thanks!
