Sound Went Away...

Sometime within the last few days my sound quit working. I rebooted,
still gone. I looked at my notes to see what I might have changed and
nothing jumps out.

Some clues:

$ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
$ cat /proc/asound/modules

$ ls -l /dev/audio
crw-rw---- 1 root audio 14, 4 2007-07-31 16:10 /dev/audio

Wondering about that I tried:

# chmod 666 /dev/audio

Still no sound. Logout, login, and still no sound. HOWEVER: before
logging in I get that little drum sound Feisty plays. The kernel
knows how to talk to my sound hardware, but not once Gnome launchs?
Did I munge some Gnome ~/.<whatever> file??

Thanks,

-kb, the Kent who has been so pleased with Feisty.

P.S. Possible related hint: Just noticed today my jpilot syncing also
stopped working in the last few days (last successful sync 23 July),
complaining it can't open the port: "pi_bind error: /dev/ttyUSB1
Permission denied". Tried playing with permissions in /dev, but the
visor module is creating these things on the fly. Might be related...
