Hello
I would install GRUB anew:
1. Start your computer with the ubuntu live-cd.
2. sudo mount /dev/hdax /mnt (x is the number of your / partiton).
if you have a separate /boot partition: sudo mount /dev/hday
/mnt/boot (y is the number of your /boot partiton).
3. sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/hda

I am new to Ubuntu and clueless as to how to address this problem. The
OS is on a new drive that has shown no flaws.

Please don't post several times about the same issue, it confuses and
annoys people and you are less likely to get good answers. Just be a bit
patient, mailing lists need some time to propagate. I can already see an
answer to the first email you sent.
