As root (go through the sudo -i process)
create a file called
/root/.forward containing the address to which you
want root's mail sent.

And/or...

Edit /etc/aliases to add: root:
myname@xxxxxxxxxx

I've seen the arguments for using both,
actually; it's not a bad
idea...

OK, I haven't, so I'll ask :-) What are the
arguments?

It would seem to me that simply editing /etc/aliases
is much
easier. .forward files are something that I would
think should only exist
for "real" users who want to set forwarding for
themselves. Just
because "root" is getting its mail forwarded isn't
helping all the other
processes that are sending mail to "webmaster" &
"postmaster" and who knows
what else, so they still need to be handled in
/etc/aliases.

That said, I'm not sure all MTAs read /etc/aliases -
but equally unsure you
can rely on .forward.

I think this response was meant for those replying to
my original post. In any case, I did say I knew
little if anything about linux mail protocal and on a
recent response that I haven't ever use the sudo -i
process command before. I have had root mail work on
several Debian based distros before, using the default
install setup including Dapper but Feisty is
different and something has changed that I'm not aware
of. I have a single user lan, use either web mail,
mozilla mail or thunderbird and evolution(which I
don't care for) and don't even care to setup a complex
multiuser mail transport system that I've read about
on the list. It's now for me, FWIW. Just help me get
to the point where I can use Mutt to read my root mail
and I'll be happy. Thanks for the reply,
