Sorry, should have mentioned...
The USB drive has an ext3 fs on it, and I have fsck'ed it.
Also, I have rebooted to no avail.

Occasionally the device manager gets confused/stopped by things like
that. There is probably a service or sequence of services that can be
restarted to fix it, but I've never been able to figure them out,
however a reboot should get you back to normal (if not then you may have
damaged the USB drive in some way).
