Plug the unit into a windows 2000 system, it's detected and usable.

plug the unit into another Ubuntu 7.04 system that can mount other USB
drives, no magic occurs.

Occasionally the device manager gets confused/stopped by things like
that. There is probably a service or sequence of services that can be
restarted to fix it, but I've never been able to figure them out,
however a reboot should get you back to normal (if not then you may have
damaged the USB drive in some way).
