What's the encryption mechanism in newer APs? WPA2 or WEP?
I don't know about dedicated APs, but I have 2 different routers with
wireless AP included. Both support WEP, WPA, WPA2. If you use WEP it
will only protect you from newbies. According to an article I read
some months ago, WEP can be cracked within about 1 minute.
Found the article: <http://www.heise-security.co.uk/news/87889>
Now that's interesting! Why would someone even use WEP in their AP?
There seems to be WPA support in Ubuntu already though.
Hmm, I think, WPA support in Ubuntu is not that bright yet. I tried to
make WPA work on my laptop which was running Kubuntu 6.06 LTS (which IS
the current LTS version). Knetworkmanager of that version knows nothing
about WPA. Sad thing: I had to install Kubuntu 7.04, although in the
beginning I switched to Kubuntu because of the time frame of support for
the LTS version.
It's sad some
vendors still seems to use WEP. Do they even care about customers?
Don't seem like that to me from your above post. :)
If you have an old laptop without hardware support for WPA, then WEP is
the only encryption available. Therefore, WEP will probably be available
in new equipment for a long time. If you only have WEP available, you
might as well switch off encryption, because it is no real security.
However, for legal reasons it may be an advantage to keep even WEP
switched on. Then an intruder has to crack the encryption, which is
illegal (at least in some jurisdictions).
