Dude...try "beryl"....it kicks arse when it comes to desktop effects.
Better than Vista's

Umm - didn't Compiz-Fusion take the place of Beryl?

(No sarcasm - I'm really asking, I thought beryl was no longer supported
and it "fused" with Compiz, am I incorrect in this assumption that to
get desktop effects I am forever entangled with Compiz-Fusion?)

I don't know about that, but there is no such package available from
within my Synaptic. Anyway, the problem was solved by activating Beryl.
