defently not.
you need at least 700 (in your home) to on directories in oder to save files
in there.
The other line where gftp tells me that the permission to write in this
directory (which it created!!) was denied.

I have a similar problem when using Krusader (directories created ok,
but files skipped). but do not know how to create a log file for that.

Did you set a custom umask?
e.g. here is mine:
$ grep mask .bash*
.bash_profile:# the default umask is set in /etc/login.defs
.bash_profile:umask 077
bye
