Assuming a "typical" installation with just a C:\ partition, one way
of
doing this is to defragment your Windows partition and then reduce
the
partition's size (there's a Windows utility to do that). You can
then
install Ubuntu in the empty space. You could also do what I did and
add
a second hard disk for Ubuntu.

Can you tell me more about that Windows utility to resize partitions?
Is
it included with Windows XP? Recently I have installed Kubuntu on 2
PCs
of a friend. Both were defragmented, but I tried to resize the
partition
with gparted. On both PCs resizing failed and Windows didn't boot any
longer. We decided to forget Windows and use only Kubuntu. Anyway,
maybe
next time someone really wants to keep Windows and not reinstall it.
Therefore it would be nice to know about that utility. I couldn't find
it
on my XP machine.

It's called Computer Management. On my computer, I get to it from Start
Control Panels > Administrative Tools > Computer Management (I also
have the Administrative Tools menu directly on my Start menu).

In the Computer Management application, select the Storage section, then
Disk Management.

Sorry about breaking into the thread, but I lost the start of this.
According to "Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out, 2nd Ed.", if you can't
get to this in the menu, you can use any command prompt by typing:
'diskmgmt.msc' without the quotes, of course.

Hope this helps, maybe even just a little bit?

Hard drives are so cheap that I would never risk putting both OS on the same
one. But then I don't know much about either operating system. tm
