Many of the newer Dells (including my Latitude 820) have a slider on the
outside that turns the wireless on or off - physically.

I almost tore all my hair out trying to fix a wireless problem until I
noticed the thingy on the side of the laptop was in the wireless-turned-off
position.

It is a good idea you can show people your wireless is off in sensitive
areas, or to save battery, but otherwise ...
