I installed 7.10 in my Dell laptop yesterday and am very pleased. The

install the restricted wifi drivers BUT I cannot get the cpu fan to work. I
was able to install the sensor to get the cpu temperature but I haven't been
able find a way to get the fan working. I have searched for info, maybe I am
looking for the wrong thing, but I cannot find anything that is helpful. I
am afraid to use it much for fear that it will overheat. Oh can anyone tell
me what the normal temperature range is for the processor in the 1200?

If your CPU is getting up into the 65C+ mark I would be (very) concerned.
I can't give you precise information on your particular machine/CPU
combination as you don't mention what processor and speed it is.

What CPU temperature are you getting and are you QUITE sure the CPU fan
isn't working? Are you not confusing the CPU fan with case exhaust fan
(which will probably be very quite most of the time)

Many moons ago, I'd be referring you to install the lmsensors package, but
it may well have been superseded these days (and I'm at work so no
repository to refer to to check).

For reference, my 2Ghz Athlon 64 in a desktop maxes out at around 58C.

Hi Steve,

This is a *Celeron(r) M 360 (1.40 GHz/1MB Cache/400MHz FSB) laptop Dell
Inspiron 1200. It is strange I plugged the XP disk back in the laptop and
ran Dell's diagnostic program on it and the fan works fine at high and low
speed BUT when I was using XP on it (while downloading the diagnostic
utility) the fan never came on. Maybe it just is designed to run hot? I know
when I had Feisty Fawn running on it I did have the fan working but it ran
all the time. Synaptic said something about recompiling the kernel and I am
not sure what that means. Here is the message: i8kutils
The programs require the kernel module i8k.o which can be compiled from the
package sources or found in Linux kernel 2.4.14 and later versions.
I hate using XP on the laptop! But I need to get the fan working and it
doesn't seem that anyone can help me with it.

Tim
