GRUB stalls during 7.10 installation

I've tried several times to install UBUNTU 7.10 but each time I get a
notice that
there's a 'fatal error' when the grub install starts and the install
process halts.
The installation appears be proceeding very nicely until the grub
installation starts.
I tried downloading and creating a new CD just to be sure it was OK and the
MD5 check indicated no errors.
I have several other Linux systems installed and never had a problem with
GRUB in any of them. As I installed these systems, the active GRUB
defaulted to the
last system installed as is normal and any of the other linux systems
(plus Windows XP)
could be selected.
