I had a couple of bad crashes in the past two days and I would like to

at least to try to isolate the problem.
In one particular occasion I could go to tty1 but every time I tried to
log in after inserting the password the terminal was filling up with
garb... ehm.. I mean useful information, and then I was asked for the

Could it be that you don't have any space left on your hard disk? If so,
reboot and select recovery mode from the grub menu (maybe you have to
press ESC to get the menu). Then you can remove some files to make some
space.
If there is some other fault, the files in /var/log might have a hint
about the problem.
