For xubuntu live cd, the kernel loads, the logo appears on the screen,

Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

The boot cd had been tested for problems.
Ideas?

Glenn,

You might try somme of the tips in the Ubuntu Wiki for the AMD 64. I
have no access to this type of system, still have all older units, best
I have at this time is an AMD 32-bit 1.5 cpu.

Perhaps obtaining a different copy of the Live CD will work. Sometimes
the latest versions seem to have fixes in them that do allow booting.

Good luck,
