How did I activate it? I don't see it under the gl-desktop's settings
unless I'm overlooking it, and didn't see it under synaptic.

run

ccsm

from the command line - If it is not available you should be given
instructions on how to install it.

It will then also be available as

System -> Preferences -> Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
