I referred back to an earlier query on this topic and installed
AlsaMixerGUI. Strangely ExtMic seems to be disabled as I cannot make
any changes there.

I seem to remember that the capture input should be switched to the
microphone channel and the capture level should be at maximum. I don't
use skype myself, so I'm not sure if this makes sense. Furthermore, sound
cards have different names for channels, controls etc. which makes it
difficult to help without knowing the type of your sound card. Anyway,
here is one more option to get some information about your sound card
settings. Please open a terminal and enter this command:

amixer contents

Then post the output here, so maybe someone has an idea what is wrong.
