sudo is a command that means "do as s(uper)u(ser).

sudoers is a file in /etc (/etc/sudoers )

which lists which users are allowed to user "sudo"

when you type

sudo command

then the command is run as root. It will ask you for a password, and
that will be your _user_ login password, not the root/admin's
password.

I installed esword4ubuntu_1.7 so many times and so many different
ways that I give up. When I check the directory
/usr/apps/local/esword4ubuntu from either login, root or user, I
see exactly the same thing. And on checking the Launch command on
both logins is /usr/apps/local/esword4ubuntu/runesword and yet it
runs from the root and nothing at all happens from the user
directroy. Remember, I've installed from both director root and
user with the exact same result.

Is there a permission I might need to change?

Pardon my ignorance, but why not use Synaptec and install
gnomesword? Sounds like you are building/installing from a source
tarball?

Sorry, I missed it the first time but not really, it's a deb file.
And it works perfectly from the root login.

Just a though - if it works as root, why not grant your non-root login
sudo access by adding it to the /etc/sudors file.

man sudoers (IIRC) has some examples on how to allow an app to be ran
sudo'd

where would I find sudoers?

thanks and not that it matters but before my MS became so bad I played a
real mean guitar for 25 years. Don't ever stop until you just can't any
more.
