broadcom , it runnning , and now i am doing all the
updating first,

After the "black screen", try pressing CTRL-ALT-F1.
If you see a
(text) login prompt, you are probably having issues
with your video
card (or monitor).

What video card are you using?

Some things to try:
Go back to the graphical VT by pressing CTRL-ALT-F7
- the screen
should go black again. Try pressing CTRL-ALT-MINUS
or CTRL ALT-PLUS
several times - you might get lucky and a
higher/lower res will show
up. If not, go back to VT1 (CTRL-ALT-F1) and login.
Edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf in vi, pico, or whatever - in the
"Device" section
change the driver to vesa. Save xorg.conf. Press
CTRL-ALT-F7 again,
then CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (or reboot). If the
graphical login appears,
then it's definitely the video driver. If not...?
