i really dont have a clue about the id, pwd coz wen i moved to this place,
the guy next door just handed me the end of a lan cable and i plugged it in
and it worked,

OK, so your ethernet controller works. Do you have a DSL router or modem
and which type is it? As it works in Windows, the ID + password must be
stored somewhere, but it could be somewhere in Windows (if you share the
machine as well) or in the modem / router.
