Do I really, really need network manager?

Hello,

The network manager keeps causing me grief both when booting *and* when
shutting down. I am tempted to remove it from my installation of ubuntu on
my laptop, but I wonder what the consequences will be.

I use quite a lot the system > Administration > Network tool, is this
related in any way to the network manager?

Cheers,

Michele
