Yes and no. To get webstart he needs sun-java6-plugins, afaik.

Yeah, well, I was wrong there :-) javaws _is_ part of the sun-java6-bin
package. Installing the plugins, though, should have made a discernible
difference to the update-java-alternatives messages you were getting...
