I'm not familiar with the particular drive that you mention, but I'll
assume it's a USB or firewire drive? If so, have you just tried to plug
it in?

Further, Windows NT didn't natively support USB. That's why you had to
install software from Maxtor to get it to work. Ubuntu does support
USB. So you should be able to just plug it in and it should show up on
your desktop or through "Places" in the menu bar at the top of your screen.
