X is moving away from conf files, and X 4.3 prefers to work with a

I've not seen this before. Given that there is no line to add to, can
one write a whole monitor definition? Is there a guide anywhere on how
to do this?
Can you set the desired resolution in menu System > PReferences > Screen
Resolution?
