It might be controlled by your theme manager, probably Emerald.

I know when I unchecked the window decorator plugin the bars
disappeared, period, for all windows. Not quite what I was looking
for, unfortunately.

Find it in Universe/X11.
It has some 30+ themes from which to choose.
