You wrote you have an ATI Mobile Radeon 9000, but you did not say which
Ubuntu version you are using. I assume Ubuntu 8.04. You also didn't
write whether you use the free ati driver, or the proprietary fglrx, but
I will assume fglrx (I think it's the default now).
If so, you should have the ATI Catalyst Control Center in menu (from the
top panel) Applications > Other. If you don't have that, install the
package fglrx-control.
In the Control Center, try the Display setting. E.g., setting the
displays to "cloned" might help.
