The cdda:// option for mplayer is separate, as is the device option.
Try something like:

mplayer -cache 500 -cdda speed=1 cdda://1 -cdrom-device /dev/scd0

( pasted where it should have been... Please don't top post...)

I got a similar result: :~$ sudo mplayer -cache 500 -cdda speed=1 cdda://1
-cdrom-device /dev/scd0

I have no idea why you used sudo, but that's a separate issue...
I assume that your user is in the "cdrom" group? Check with the command:

Mplayer always spits out the stuff above here, too - but it's
harmless...

Playing cdda://1.
Can't open disc.
Failed to open cdda://1.

Is the device actually /dev/scd0 ? For example, I have a cd-rw and a
dvd-rw device here - the dvd device is /dev/scd1 , the cd-rw is
device /dev/scd0 .

cdda://1 would be the first track on the disc. Do you get the same
result with, say, cdda://2 and so on?

Also about 1/2 the time when I load Hardy I have no sound at all. Other
times I have sound with some things and not others. It's quite unreliable.

I don't think this is related - for example, if this was a sound issue
I would expect mplayer to at least find the device and open the disc.
