Subject: hash sum mismatch when trying to upgrade
Hello everyone. I'm trying to upgrade from 6.06 to 8.04 and I keep
backports/multiverse/s
http://en.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy-
ource/Sources.bz2Last week when I did a test run of the update on a dev machine it was
Hash Sum mismatch
, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or
old ones used instead.
Getting a bunch of these when trying to run do-release-upgrade -d.
working fine, now nothing. I am getting the same results on all my
machines that I'm trying it on now. I've tried to wipe out
/var/lib/apt/lists/ like some lists had suggested, I've tried normal
updates, I've tried cleaning and -fix-missing to no avail. Been trying
for the last 24 hours.
wrong on all my 6.06 ubuntu machines?
Is this a problem with the mirrors or did something magically go
Thanks!
[Michael P. Varre]If you have medibuntu.org in your sources list, it appears to have
disappeared. I wasn't sure it was a problem here at work, or a generic
problem, so I was going to wait until I got home. I do know it was
working last night (US-EDT), as the same updates worked at home.
Hi Michael:
If this is not relevant please just chalk it up to my being brand new both
to Linux and 8.04.
Like I say maybe the wubi installer is only being used for initial install
and not upgrade.
But my experience was just great. My only decision was a password and the
installer did
the rest from a unpartitioned HD.
Hope this helps someone
Allen
Thanks for the reply Kim. No I have all the standard mirrors that LTS
Server comes with. Its been 3 days and still the same result.

This is a really awesome idea! I had no idea this could be done! Isa
there
way I can setup my server to accept HTTP requests on a certain port and
forward those to my router's firmware as the result?
Yes, several. For example you could create netfilter rules that do this,
or you could set up Xinetd which comes with a redirect service.
For example, an apache2
server that treats the router's main page as the document root, if that
makes sense.
Yes, httpd's mod_proxy can do that too.
But: installing, configuring and taking care of a full fledged web
server just to be able to access your router's web interface?
I guess it would be like using my linux server as a DNSto
forwarding service? Not sure how to say it, but if I could avoid having
open an SSH tunnel on my remote (windows) machine, that would be one
step
closer to greatness!
Well, this "greatness" could also be "openness" - if you don't take
additional measures. Do you think that's really worth the trouble (and
danger)?
Using a ssh tunnel, OTOH, gives you authentication on the fly by using
measures that are already there. Only someone who is able to log into
your server will be able to create and use this tunnel.
If it's too much typing you're worried about: ssh from the openssh
package (also available for Cygwin) can be configured that a simple
ssh myserver
connects to the correct server with the correct username creating the
desired tunnel. If I'm not completely mistaken, similar things should be
possible with putty.
Well I wasn't looking to make this more complicated than it needed to be,
I
was just throwing ideas out there to see if any would be a good choice. My
server is a private server in that I use it for my own personal use and I
don't publicly advertise it. Security isn't a huge concern of mine, mainly
just convenience. Using Apache2 would be the same as enabling remote
management on my router itself, however I can't do this because the
firmware
feature for this is broken at the moment. I was simply seeking a
convenient
alternative for now.
I'll look into the advice you gave me and see if I can't figure this out!
Thanks a lot!

I am the IT Tech at a small K-12 school district. While we are, I guess
you
could say, a Windows school, I have been experimenting with various
versions
of Linux for a possible roll-out on some of our machines. Anyway, I have
found the Edubuntu product and was going to give it a try but when I go to
install it on a PC it tells me that the software I am using is for X86
machines and that I am running a machine with an i1586 processor. Both of
the machines that I have tried (A Dell GX240 and AcerPower F2) have P4
processors. To my understanding, these should be considered an X86
architecture. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Generally, packages are kept back if updating them would require other
packages to be installed/uninstalled. Do something like
aptitude -s dist-upgrade
to see what would be done additionally on updating the above packages.
FYI, dist-upgrade has been renamed to full-upgrade (upgrade has been
renamed to safe-upgrade). Ubuntu have been using the new name for the
options for awhile now (at least since Gibbon)

Hi,
I've installed ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop (dell inspiron 700m). Everthing
seems working all right. However, the screen sometimes freezes and i
cannot
do anything more than pressing turn-off. i had a similar problem before
when
i was trying to turn off/restart the computer. I've solved it by adding
the
line -Option "ForceEnablePipeA" "true"- to the xorg.conf under the
Section
"Device". Thank you for your reply in advance.
