I had an issue when I upgraded from 1.5x to 1.6x. I found that
uninstalling and then reinstalling Client for Microsoft Networks did the
trick for me in Win2KP. See my notes on this bug report:

I might have to try uninstalling and reinstalling MS Network to see if
that helps at all :-/

Did you get this working?

Not yet, I had time to verify the message I last posted about the steps
to browse the network (I can mount shared on other systems in the
"external" network by IP, but not systems name...systems outside the VB
system are on an Active Directory domain with a Windows DNS server,
don't know if that would affect it or not) before I had to head out.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the networking component was my next
experiment.

I'm also about to try installing Windows into a VB install on another
computer that never had VB installed on it tonight or tomorrow.

Try uninstalling the VBox guest addition (use the standard control panel
'remove programs' method, and & uninstalling MS Network via control
panel/network. After it boots back up reinstall the MS Network, reboot
and then reinstall the guest addition.
