Are you using the Alternate Install Live CD, the one without the
graphical installer? The regular LiveCD with the graphical installer
should allow you to use a mouse. Also, is the computer you are trying
to install Ubuntu to a 64bit system? I found that the 32bit version
of Ubuntu tends to hang on 64bit machines from personal experience.
If its a 64bit Intel Core 2 Dual/Quad or AMD Athlon 64 or Athlon 64x2
system you need the 64bit version.
