Hardy 8.04, can't delete items from trash

I have three folders with sub-folders that appear to be "stuck" in
trash when I try to empty trash (running gnome FWIW). I'm told I
don't have permission to delete them.
Where is the trash folder really stored? I'd like to go there in
a shell as root and whack these folders once and for all.
