Normal Ubuntu need at least 390MB RAM. You can try alternative CD for
installation - it should work. Also You may try DamnSmallLinux.
I have an old IBM P2 laptop with 256mb RAM and a 40gig drive - it
installed 8.04 just fine and runs great for a simple web browsing
machine. You do NOT need 384mb RAM for the LiveCD installer to work,
but it really really really helps and would give you a better desktop
experience.
You've already got the CD, just give it a shot and see if it will work!

it might help to kill the gui with the command: "init 3" I belive it
is (not sure). If the GUI is killed there is some more memory
available, since the GUI doesn't have to remain there. This should
make 256 meg seem like a large amount.
The only problem you have is that you will have to install using the
GUI and that process wil be slooooow as hell. Then again, once it
runs, why should you need to enter the GUI (assuming the EMC PC is
only running the milling machine, and gets the data on what to do from
a faster PC).
Interresting project, and I would surely love to hear wether you
succeded (and how)
