Google Desktop

I just installed Google Desktop and have had nothing but problems with Firefox and Thunderbird ever since. They both just turn gray and nothing else happens until I exit Google Desktop. Is this typical? I also cannot check on the Index Progress. I click on that option and nothing happens.
