diff -r and symbolic links to nowhere

when I do a diff -r and and
there are symbolic links pointing to nonexistant files on both sides
it reports the file as missing on both sides.
this can really clutter up the output
obscuring the real differences,
I wish there was an option
to accept symbolic links to nonexistant files on both sides
as the same
but I don't find any option to do that on the diff man page
is there a variant of diff that has the desired behavior?
