Re: Why is HAL being made the default when it's not ready?

Or would you rather have to go to the Terminal and mount /dev/cdrom
/mnt every time you want to read a CD?

Funny you say that.

Every since I upgraded to 8.04 LTS on a desktop when I connect
a usb stick or insert media I get "Invalid Mount Options" popup with
no log message I can find saying *what* mount options are invalid.

Oddly, my laptop with the 8.04 LTS works fine. I've posted about this
a few times here and not been able to resolve. So, yes, I kind of do
like going to a terminal and using mount as at least I can see it work
and know why when it doesn't.

I was now just reading

http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal
http://www.mythic-beasts.com/~mark/random/hal/

hoping to learn how hal (and gnome-volume-manager) works to mount (and
where its getting its "invalid" options). I'm hopeful I can find
something linked on that page that explains how all the parts fit
together and I'll learn how to fix my desktop.

The magic is nice when it works.
