Intrepid - brown desktop only!

I upgraded to 8.10 from 8.04.

Reboot, X came up, logged in...only to get a blank brown desktop, no
toolbars or anything aside from the mouse pointer.

I ended up logging in through SSH from a notebook Mac, installing xfce,
reboot, log into that session, uninstall all compiz components from
synaptic, then logging off and back in to gnome.

My desktop came up sans Compiz effect.

Profiler states I have an Intel 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE chipset
integrated controller from Dell (device 0126) with 128 meg of memory.

Anyone else run into this or know of a fix to get compiz working again?
Proprietary drivers utility is saying that I'm not running anything that
can be enabled.
