What graphics card are you using?
Which Ubuntu version are you running?
If it is Nvidia then ensure you run nvidia-settings as root. Then once
you have the seetings as you want then, make sure you click on
"Save to X Configuration File"
I have been through all this myself with 8.04.1. Unfortunately the
nvidia drivers seen to be broken on 8.10.
