I've tried to be somewhat patient with the whole "NetworkManger" issues
in the past, but I am seriously starting to wonder if this "application"
should be placed in the "what was I thinking" category...

A putative "helper" application is not allowed to interfere with manual
network settings made in the traditional config files. Period.

When NetworkMunger brought chaos to my network, from the moment of
installation of 7.10, I applied this fix:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge network-manager

Temporarily resolved: purged network-manager & installed wicd - both
wireless & wired working properly now with _fixed_ IP's. I'll go back
and revisit NM when I have a little more time & patience.

I was just about to mention wicd - I installed it on my new netbook a
couple of days ago (Hardy, not Intrepid) and am enjoying it... so
here's a +1 for wicd. The only drawback I've seen so far is no vpn
and no 3G connectivity, but I don't need 3G.
