Well hell, I almost had the reply finished before I lost connection again. Everything running is very slow motion; something must be slowing machine down, I had a PII that ran faster. Well, here goes again but it never will be the same as original try.

From: Nils Kassube <kassube@xxxxxxx>Network manager is still installed. The new maching is in shop to replace cpu fan. But this 1999 Dell Dimensions XPS T450 needs much help. I used all of kde's network management programs but mostly network manager and kwifimanager which is flaky. I'll try to finish this post again but if you feel better about it I'd be happy to start up gnome and use it. Just let me know.

Thanks for jumping in. BTW, ATT says I'm notconnected to the network
on the wifi and that's why I can't establish aconnection at
http://192.168.1.254. Doesn't seem likely to mebut that's what they
say. How does one determine if they are connected toanother wifi
network besides there own?
I think the explanation of the wrong wireless network makes
sense. If
network manager is still installed, it may have undone your
static setup
and used DHCP on the other network. How did you do the
manual setup for
the wireless part? Can you post your
/etc/network/interfaces file?
Back to your questions. It's not using DHCP according to all the nm prograns I've looked at which is all. Interface file is:
lchata@ubuntu:/var/log$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# Used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8). See the interfaces(5) manpage or
# /usr/share/doc/ifupdown/examples for more information.
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254
wireless-key xxxxxxxxxx for security
wireless-essid 2WIRExxx
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.254
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0
auto wlan0
auto eth0
lchata@ubuntu:/var/log$
I don't see anything wrong. Hope you do.
To find out which wireless network you are using, click onI don't have that one anymore in kde but would be happy to go to gnome and check it out as said before. What I see is kwifimanager applet and it's flaky too. I have attached a snapshot of it full screen so you can see it as I couldn't copy anything from it. Hope it gets through. BTW, did an apt search for network manager aplet and have both gnome and kde aplets installed but don't know how to start up the gnome one I think you want. Well heck, I just went to gnome and opened it up; attaching snapshot for you. I don't see anything different from kde but you may. This took a bit of effort due to losing connection and gnome is a little faster than kde as it should. Hope it helps.
the nm-applet
icon (2 computers). There you should see the wireless
networks. Each
network has a bar for the signal level and the network name
on the right
of the bar. On the left of the bar there should be an x in
the line of
the network which is used.
