roger@roger-desktop:~$ lsof | grep /dev/snd

No problems with the output from the above 2 commands. Nothing has
grabbed /dev/dsp, and stopped other sound apps from playing, and it's
normal
for the mixer to show in /dev/snd.

it may be worth looking at /etc/group, and make sure you are, or still are a
member of the audio group. I did see a problem where the original user had
sounds, but wasn't a member of the audio group, then he added more users,
which were not added to /etc/group's audio group, and also lost sound
output
for his original user, which as I've said earlier, was never listed
in /etc/group, although he was able to use sounds as user with no problem.

I hope you're following me here, as it may sound a bit weird, but when I
suggested he add his user name to the audio group his sounds worked again as
user. If for some reason you see the same problem, with a missing user on the
audio group, you can simply add your user name to the audio group directly,
as root, using gedit. Mine looks like this. See below.

audio: x: 29: djmons

It's worth a look.

Meanwhile, back to alsamixer. Open it again as, alsamixer -D hw:0, and check
for muted controls. There may be switches, without sliders, that may need to
be toggled.

Download this script from the link below, save it as alsa-info.sh, make it
executable, and run it as, ./alsa-info.sh --no-upload. Attach the file which
has been saved in your /tmp directory when replying to the list.

This script gathers a lot of info, specifically about the sounds, and may help
me, or others on the list to help you resolve this sound problem.

Sorry. I can't think of any more suggestions at this point in time.

Best wishes.

Yes. I installed it on a computer that I gave away for Christmas for a
Filippino family. I can't recall exactly what the package was, but I
_think_ it was in the education-language package.

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/education-language

There was a bunch of language learning packages that I installed - but I
prepped the computer back in November, so can't recall everything that I
put on it.

Plus there is:
vocabulary trainer for KDE
KVocTrain is a little utility to help you train your vocabulary when
you are trying to learn a foreign language. You can create your own
database with the words you need. It is intended as a replacement
for index (flash) cards.

You probably remember flashcards from school. The teacher would
write the original expression on the front side of the card and the
translation on the back. Then look at the cards one after another.
If you knew the translation, you could put it away. If you failed,
you put it back to try again.

KVocTrain is not intended to teach you grammar or other sophisticated
things. This is and probably will stay beyond the scope of this
application.

I (attempted to) converted a scratch file system from ext3 to ext4 on
Jaunty Alpha3. It appears the file system is now screwed (which I don't
care about), as follows:

# umount /t/opt/
# tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/vol01/opt
# fsck -f /dev/vol01/opt
fsck 1.41.3 (12-Oct-2008)
e2fsck 1.41.3 (12-Oct-2008)
fsck.ext4: Group descriptors look bad... trying backup blocks...
Group descriptor 81 checksum is invalid. Fix<y>? yes

Group descriptor 125 checksum is invalid. Fix<y>? yes

/opt contains a file system with errors, check forced.
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Group 81's inode table at 2654210 conflicts with some other fs block.
Relocate<y>? yes

Error allocating 512 contiguous block(s) in block group 81 for inode
table: Could not allocate block in ext2 filesystem Restarting e2fsck
from the beginning...
fsck.ext4: Group descriptors look bad... trying backup blocks...

(repeats for ever)

Any hints as to whether this is recoverable before I mkfs.ext4 over it?

Try running ./configure --help It should spit out available options

Yep... I already knew that. For compiling OpenCASCADE i had to tell it
