Subject: Re: Problem with home directory
I just solved similar problem in my Ubuntu system 8.10. it was related to
the illegal name of the file in my home folder. Just delete the file or
folder that you think it is has a problem (I deleted the file by using
another linux system installed in a separate partition).

2009/2/4 Alain Muls <alain.muls@xxxxxxxxxx>

Hi

Since about 2 weeks I have a big problem accessing my home directory.
Every
application (file manager, emacs, firefox, konsole eg ls ~ ...) that wants
to
access the listing of my home dir, stalls for several minutes. This
problem
does not exist for any other directory.

I do not have a big file in home, and their is 15% free disk space.

Another problem, perhaps related to the previous problem, is that printing
takes also a real long time (minutes before I get a printer selection from
cups).

Any help is appreciated

Tx/Alain

Subject: very slooooooow cups print dialog
Hi

Opening a print dialog is almost impossible for me. It takes several
minutes
before a print dialog opens.

I only want to use cups as a client, or can I install something else than
cups
to do printing (not preferred solution, but if needed, than OK)

bye/Alain

no, you cant make that assumption, because to do so, says your
favouring
sudo, which for reasons stated before may not be everybody case,

Actually, all I was saying that everyone has a _choice_ as to how
they
want to do admin work on their Linux box. You do it you way, someone
else can do it their way. There is no one perfect answer, it's all
circumstantial.

Yes, but as I have pointed out, if you set up a root login on Ubuntu
some things don't work any more because they *assume* the default sudo
setup, services-admin is a case in point.

It's something timing out, probably a link to a filesystem that isn't
there any more. Do you have any nfs or samba filesystems?
Hi Chris

That is correct.
I have 2 links to a NFS mounted directory and 2 links to samba mounted
directories. I can only enable the nfs at work, while at home I have
access to
the samba shared hard disk.

What should I do to avoid these problems, while maintaining the facility
to
link to these dirs.

So is this on a laptop that you use at home and work - with the Samba
links working at home and the NFS ones at work?

So your wireless device seems to be a RTL8178b. I suppose this might help:

Could this be related to your problem with nfs links in your home
directory? If so, I would suggest you remove these nfs links and try
again. Or you could move these nfs links to a subdirectory if you
absolutely need them.
